Why Mayor - Why Me:
I have 40 years of relevant experience gained across the public and private sectors as a director, manager, consultant, expert, advisor, analyst and team builder. Being Mayor of Port Hope Municipality demands leadership, management, communications, and knowledge of planning, budgeting, finance, and others. I am at the stage of life where I want to put my full range of abilities at the service of Port Hope to preserve and enhance the special heritage and culture of our beautiful town and rural area.
I commit, as Mayor, to demonstrate leadership in solving important municipal issues - from managing infrastructure backlogs, limiting property tax increases, and improving transparent governance. I will work tirelessly to protect our environment, grow our local economy, and lead our council with absolute accountability.
Why Not Council?
Serving as a Councillor provides a valuable public service, but it does not necessarily require or develop the same leadership experience and abilities demanded of a Mayor. Council provides a solid grounding in the mechanics of Town Hall, along with exposure to a wide range of local issues and municipal politics.
As a six-year resident of Port Hope, a member of various Port Hope Facebook communities, and a close follower of local politics and issues, I have developed a solid understanding and appreciation of Port Hope’s character and community. I also volunteered under the previous Council to serve on the Library Board.
Some of the significant pressures facing Port Hope involve other levels of government — including OPG and the Province, and CNL and the federal government. Experience dealing with these relationships is not gained solely through serving on Council. It also comes through intergovernmental liaison and negotiation — work I have undertaken in my professional capacity advising federal Ministers.
These matters involve environmental, economic, financial and strategic considerations. My advanced education in economics, together with my professional experience, provides me with the knowledge and expertise to address these issues and represent Port Hope effectively.
